Based on Victor Hugo’s novel, Les Misérables follows Jean Valjean, who regains his life after 19 years of imprisonment for stealing bread. Pursued by Inspector Javert, Valjean’s life soon crosses paths with the lives of others like orphan Cosette, the revolutionary students, and the cunning Thénardiers. With a score by Claude-Michel Schönberg and lyrics by Herbert Kretzmer, the musical features songs like “I Dreamed a Dream,” “One Day More,” and “Do You Hear the People Sing?” Since its pre-Broadway run at the Kennedy Center in 1986, it has been seen by over 130 million people across 53 countries and 22 languages, earning eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical. This production, with Matt Kinley’s set design inspired by Hugo’s paintings, promises a fresh yet faithful spectacle.
