Parade

Without a doubt: ‘Parade’ hit the musical world with a force, weaving folk, rock, R&B, and gospel influences together with hard-hitting lyrics, Alfred Uhry’s incredible book, dynamic performances, and a touching story that fuelled the development of the Anti-Defamation League - a Jewish civil rights organization.

The tragic true story that inspired countless films, books, and television series, as well as many social movements, also became Jason Robert Brown’s debut as composer and another feather in acclaimed playwright Alfred Uhry’s cap. This life-changing tale, however, ended up becoming something nobody could have could have imagined in their wildest dreams: the overwhelming acclaim, the boundless reverence, and the gigantic amount of standing ovations ‘Parade’ would achieve.

After the massive success of its 1998 debut-run on Broadway, earning ‘Parade’ two Tony Awards, six Drama Desk Awards, and a New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award; its 2008 London run that landed seven Laurence Olivier Award nominations, and the 2023 Broadway resurrection that added another two Tony Awards, one Drama Desk Award, two Outer Critics Circle Awards, a New York Drama Critics’ Circle special citation, and a Grammy Award nomination to ’Parade’’s already heavily loaded award-shelf, the musical sensation is finally heading out, bringing the gloriously hopeful musical to anticipating audiences across North America.

’Parade’ is based on the true story of Jewish factory manager Leo Frank who was wrongfully accused and convicted in 1913 for the rape and murder of a 13-year old factory worker. While his initial death sentence was reduced to life in prison, the massive media sensationalization and surrounds of bigotry, prejudice, corruption, antisemitism, and misinformation resulted in Leo Frank’s death as a result of so-called ‘mob-justice’.

‘Parade’ is one of those masterpieces that relentlessly penetrates the heart, while warming the heart equally as relentlessly. From the unnerving pertinence and enthralling performances by the world-renowned cast to the superb original music, from the exceptional ensemble to powerful lyrics, from the gripping true story to the effective imagery with just enough flashiness to captivate, from the unraveling of complex human emotions to the fearless love between two people in the face of adversity, ‘Parade’ is destined for triumph - absolutely the biggest must-see of the season.

While ‘Parade’ is addressing injustices of over a century ago, it still resonates, captivates, and moves, and is more relevant than ever. Even today, the ‘parade’ continues, but perhaps the outcome can be changed. Go see it - you’ll be better for it.
