‘Parade’: the exceptionally powerful musical theatre production that serves biting social commentary on top of wonderful music, superb performances, powerful visuals, and a tale that hits really deep.
When book-writer Alfred Uhry, who has a personal connection to the tale at the heart of the musical, and composer Jason Robert Brown was approached by co-conceiver Harold Prince to bring the unnerving true story of Leo Frank to life on stage, none could have possibly anticipated the immense successes that the production was destined for.
After the massive triumphs of its 1998 debut-run on Broadway, earning ‘Parade’ two Tony Awards, six Drama Desk Awards, and a New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award; its 2008 London run that racked up seven Laurence Olivier Award nominations, and the 2023 Broadway comeback that added another two Tony Awards, one Drama Desk Award, two Outer Critics Circle Awards, a New York Drama Critics’ Circle special citation, and a Grammy Award nomination to the production’s lengthy award-list, the exceptional production that took the musical world by storm is finally hitting the road to bring the gripping musical to eager audiences across the nation.
’Parade’ is based on the true story of Jewish factory manager Leo Frank who was falsely accused and convicted in 1913 for the rape and murder of a 13-year old factory worker. While his initial death penalty was reduced to life in prison, the hugely distorted media coverage and surrounds of intolerance, prejudice, dishonesty, antisemitism, and misinformation resulted in Leo Frank’s death as a result of so-called ‘mob-justice’.
‘Parade’ is one of those masterpieces that relentlessly tugs at the heartstrings, while warming the heart equally as relentlessly. From the unnerving pertinence and layered, passionate performances by the incredibly talented cast to the magnificent original music, from the wonderful ensemble to Jason Robert Brown’s stark reminders of how history repeats itself encapsulated within his powerful lyrics, from the relevant true story to the striking imagery with just enough deft flourishes to ensnare, from the unraveling of complex human emotions to the bold and brave love between two people in the face of adversity, ‘Parade’ has what it takes to uphold the proverbial mirror to society - absolutely the biggest must-see of the season.
Incredibly moving, ‘Parade’ will change you - and what more could one possibly want from experiencing a true work of art on stage?. Go see it - you’ll be better for it.
