‘Parade’ has been rated as one of the finest, most admired and compelling productions to hit stages this year.
When the award-winning Alfred Uhry, who has a personal connection to the tale at the core of the musical, and composer Jason Robert Brown was approached by internationally acclaimed Harold Prince to bring the harrowing true story of Leo Frank to life on stage, none could have possibly anticipated the mammoth successes that the production was destined for.
Following ‘Parade’s tremendous triumphs of its 1998 debut-run on Broadway, earning the Alfred Uhry and Jason Robert Brown masterpiece two Tony Awards, six Drama Desk Awards, and a New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award; its 2008 London run that landed seven Laurence Olivier Award nominations, and the 2023 Broadway revival that added another two Tony Awards, one Drama Desk Award, two Outer Critics Circle Awards, a New York Drama Critics’ Circle special citation, and a Grammy Award nomination to ’Parade’’s already heavily loaded award-shelf, the exceptional production that took the musical world by storm is finally hitting the road to bring the gloriously hopeful musical to eagerly awaiting audiences across the nation.
’Parade’ follows the true story of Jewish factory manager Leo Frank who was wrongfully accused and convicted in 1913 for the rape and murder of a 13-year old factory worker. While his initial death penalty was reduced to life imprisonment, the massive media sensationalization and surrounds of fanaticism, prejudice, dishonesty, antisemitism, and misinformation resulted in Leo Frank’s death as a result of so-called ‘mob-justice’.
Even though ‘Parade’is exceptionally heart-wrenching, gripping, and sometimes even distressing, it is also filled with conviction, love, and faithfulness. From the haunting relevance of it and layered, passionate performances by the stellar cast to the compelling original music, from the wonderful ensemble to powerful lyrics, from the relevant true story to the vivid imagery with just enough flashiness to fascinate, from delving deep into complex human emotions to the unbreakable love between a man and his young wife at the very heart of it all, ‘Parade’ has what it takes to uphold the proverbial mirror to society - absolutely the biggest must-see of the season.
While ‘Parade’ is addressing injustices of over a century ago, it still resonates, captivates, and moves, and is more relevant than ever. Even today, the ‘parade’ continues, but perhaps the outcome can be changed. Go see it - you’ll be better for it.
