‘Parade’: the exceptionally powerful musical theatre production that serves biting social commentary on top of wonderful music, superb performances, powerful visuals, and a tale that hits really deep.
The lamentable true story that inspired countless films, books, and television series, as well as many social movements, also became Jason Robert Brown’s debut as composer and another feather in acclaimed playwright Alfred Uhry’s cap. This incredibly moving tale, however, ended up becoming something nobody could have could have imagined in their wildest dreams: the overwhelming acclaim, the enormous reverence, and the gigantic amount of standing ovations ‘Parade’ would achieve.
After the massive triumphs of its 1998 debut-run on Broadway, earning ‘Parade’ two Tony Awards, six Drama Desk Awards, and a New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award; its 2008 London run that received seven Laurence Olivier Award nominations, and the 2023 Broadway revival that added another two Tony Awards, one Drama Desk Award, two Outer Critics Circle Awards, a New York Drama Critics’ Circle special citation, and a Grammy Award nomination to the production’s lengthy award-list, the musical sensation is finally heading out, bringing the gripping musical to eagerly awaiting audiences across the nation.
Alfred Uhry and Jason Robert Brown’s masterpiece is based on the flawed 1913 court case and imprisonment of Jewish factory manager and newly-wed Leo Frank, for the alleged murder of a 13-year old girl. While his initial death sentence was reduced to life imprisonment, the hugely distorted media coverage and surrounds of fanaticism, blatant discrimination, corruption, antisemitism, and misinformation resulted in Leo Frank’s kidnapping and eventual murder.
Even though ‘Parade’is extraordinarily heart-wrenching, intriguing, and sometimes even shocking, it is also filled with hope, compassion, and fidelity. From the haunting relevance of it and captivating performances by the incredibly talented cast to the magnificent score, from the wonderful ensemble to powerful lyrics, from the relevant true story to the striking imagery with just enough deft flourishes to captivate, from the elucidation of complex human emotions to the fierce love between a man and his young wife at the very heart of it all, ‘Parade’ has what it takes to uphold the proverbial mirror to society - absolutely the biggest must-see of the season.
Incredibly touching, ‘Parade’ will change you - and what more could one possibly want from experiencing a true work of art on stage?. Go see it - you’ll be better for it.
