PLOT
Marty McFly went to visit his friend Doc Brown, a crazed scientist at his home. He finds a message telling him to meet at the parking lot of Twin Pines Mall at midnight. When Marty arrives there, Doc Brown shows him his latest invention, a time machine created from a DeLorean. However, an accident ensues and Doc Brown is dying from radiation poisoning. Marty immediately runs into the car with the scientist to bring him to the hospital, but the Delorean went as fast as 88 miles per hour, triggering the machine and sending themselves back in time to 1955. Marty encounters his parents while they were still in high school. However, Marty’s actions have led to exemplary changes in the present. Will Marty be able to fix his future and save Doc? PRODUCTION
Back to the Future premiered at the Manchester Opera House in 2020, a trial run before it went to London’s West On the following year. The musical features music and lyrics by Alan Silvetri and Glend Balard. Meanwhile, the book was written by original Back to the Future film screenwriter Bob Gale. The production was spearheaded by producer Robert Zemeckis with John Rando as director. The musical was met with great reception from London audiences evem securing itself the Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Musical in 2022. The production secured a total of seven nominations that year. Over at What’sOnStage awards, Back to the Future won four awards, including Best New Musical. In 2023, the production finally went to Broadway and premiered at the historic Winter Garden Theatre where it ran from 2023 to 2025. The Broadway version earned two Tony nominations and five Outer Critics Circle nominations. This year, Back to the Future goes back on tour after a massively successful 2024 run!

Back to the Future received great reception from fans and critics. It’s definitely a musical created to please die hard fans from the original 1985 film but also entertain new viewers who are witnessing this storyline for the first time. The Guardian called this production, “a faithful adaptation for die hard fans.” In addition, the reviewer wrote, “It’s all zippy, loud and stylish – and the DeLorean is a thrill.” Over at the Hollywood Reporter, the writer went all giddy over the time machine, “What gets everyone the most excited, of course, is the car — the souped-up, scientifically enhanced time- traveling DeLorean that figured so prominently in the film’s plot. Needless to say, the vehicle gets the biggest ovation of the evening.”
Over in Time Out, the musical was called a showstopper, “Every scene is a showstopper, bedaubed with backing dancers and Tim Hatley’s ever-changing, retina-searing sets.” The writer continued, “The story remains an extremely enjoyable romp, with chuckles aplenty; the stagecraft is a wow, especially with regards to the DeLorean.”
Lastly, Variety called this musical “lots of fun” and “a great night out,” He goes on to praise the design from this stunning musical, “Tim Hatley’s stunning, multi-dimensional design — thrillingly meshing physical production, lighting, projection, sound and hydraulics.”
