It is chock-full of some of the most well-known songs around the globe, and has been captivating audiences since 1959. Completely defying its age, it is still the beautiful love story, still the resonating tale about climbing every mountain, still the unparallelled theatrical experience it was when our grandfathers and mothers saw it first, and will continue to be all of that and more for many more years to come.
Everybody that has ever hummed along with ’So Long, Farewell’, found meaning and encouragement in ‘Climb Ev’ry Mountain’, and tapped their feet along to ‘The Lonely Goatherd’, and even those who are bigger naysayers than Captain Von Trapp before he meets Maria, will be delighted to hear the news: ‘The Sound Of Music’ is finally back on the road, and will be bringing the music to District Of Columbia in 2025! That’s right, Washington, you’re the lucky ones this fall, because ‘The Sound Of Music’ is coming to the Kennedy Center Opera House on Thursday 11th September 2025!

Following its 1959 premiere, it became clear that Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II’s very last creation alongside playwrights Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse, was meant for great things.
No musical can come close to ‘The Sound Of Music’ when it comes to the amount of adored and well-known numbers; a musical that can remain as apt and treasured for nearly seven decades as ‘The Sound Of Music’ does not exist; and a tale as heart-warming, yet bravely addressing major social issues, is yet to be created.
No other musical has been rekindled as many times, had more performances around the world, and has been received with more acclaim than ‘The Sound Of Music’. It landed no less than five Tony Awards, a Theatre World Award, and an Outer Critics Circle Special Award, alongside many nominations. ‘The Sound Of Music’ has also been adapted into a hugely successful film released in 1965, and still enjoyed around the globe.
‘The Sound Of Music’, inspired by Maria von Trapp’s ‘The Story of the Trapp Family Singers, follows the tale of Maria, a free-spirited nun, who takes on the massive task as governess for Captain Georg von Trapp’s seven children, and brings much love, happiness, and of course, music, back to the family. The family is faced with many troubles - from the threat the annexation of Austria into Nazi Germany to the blooming romance between Captain von Trapp - man who vowed to marry another, and Maria, who vowed to remain a nun.
There is no doubt that there is plenty to love about ‘The Sound Of Music’: from the remarkable stagecraft of the oldest nun right down to the youngest Von Trapp child, to the classic, wonderful music that becomes an earworm without any effort; from the lush sounding orchestra to the gorgeous sets that change effortlessly from a grey cathedral to the old Austrian grandeur of the Von Trapp house; from the heartwarming tale about overcoming adversity and an innocent love that blooms like the Edelweiss itself to the highly talented cast that embodies their parts with perfection, delivers the music with proficiency, and steals hearts from the first notes.
The song had it right: the hills are indeed alive with the sound of music, and this fall, you’ll sing once more.
