LES MISÉRABLES'

Four decades ago, the very first musical script was prepared for the stage adaptation of Les Misérables, initially intended for production into French. Stemming from Victor Hugo’s original novel, of the same name, the plot of Les Mis was modified and turned into a musical, performed as a show only sung from start to finish, which was a unique approach to stagecraft in that decade. A star show was born. Not long after this, it was announced that an English interpretation was to be created, in collaboration with the Royal Shakespeare Company, where the script and songs were translated.

The English production of the musical only premiered with a two-month run at the Barbican Centre, but because of its astounding success and larger audiences with the English version, the show unsurprisingly, moved to West End’s Palace Theatre in 1985, a significantly more superior venue, and has remained there for close to two decades. The musical then relocated once more, to another theater, the Queen’s Theatre, now named The Sondheim Theatre, and continues to run until present day. Adding together all its tours, since its first showing in 1980, Les Misérables is statistically the longest-running musical in the entire world. With almost 40 years in London's West End solely, and not counting its foreign tour locations, it is undeniable that this global hit endures and is described as 'awesome' in the eyes of the musical’s fan base. The narrative and the epic musical score, which revolves around redemption, passion, and selfless love, always brings viewers to tears, due to the evident heart behind the mask of each character and act presented. Les Misérables has become so famous that the play has been converted to motion pictures numerous times and has been received very positively, even on a different platform.
