In 2019, premiering at the Al Hirschfeld theatre, the 2001 film Moulin Rouge was converted into the now-famed live performance in Broadway. Originally written and directed by Baz Luhrmann, it was performed beautifully by famous cast members including Aaron Tveit and Karen Olivo, who embodied the roles of Christian and Satine respectively, and creative experts including director Alex Timbers and music arrangements and creations by Justine Levine, behind the scenes.
Moulin Rouge! The Musical is an adaptation filled with young passion, love, and loss that shows us all four Bohemian values of truth, beauty, freedom, and love. At the end of the 1800s and at the peak of Bohemianism, during the span of La Belle Époque, Christian, an American writer and composer, searches for his dream and inspiration. He aspires to set in motion a chance to succeed as a writer and journeys to Montmartre, Paris, where he meets two local acquaintances, Lautrec and Santiago, who influence him to create a play that they can showcase. It is in the underworld of the Moulin Rouge nightclub where he meets Satine, the star of the the infamous nightclub that catches his eye and heart. Their developing love however encounters a difficult challenge in the person of the rich and powerful Duke of Monroth, who is pledged Satine by the nightclub’s owner Harold Zidler, in exchange for a large financial investment to keep Moulin Rouge afloat and improve the nightclub's standing. So begins Christian and Satine’s struggle for love on the Broadway stage.
Essentially a classical affair that remains relatable and relevant up to today, Moulin Rouge is also a combination of both ballads and pop music, putting together numbers not just from the original film adaptation, but also song mash-ups and medleys from modern songs that were injected into the creative direction of the musical.
