When director Michael Arden decided to revive Alfred Uhry’s ‘Parade’ on Broadway in 2023, he was onto something.
‘Parade’ left an enormous impression on all theatregoers - enthusiasts, professionals, critics, and laymen alike, and with its harrowing tale of hope, humanity, loyalty, and love in a world of discord, trumped-up stories, and injustice, it drove an important message home. With heartfelt performances by a world-renowned cast, incredible visuals, Jason Robert Brown’s incredible score, ‘Parade’ received two Tony Awards for Best Book of a Musical and Best Original Score, six Drama Desk Awards, and a New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award for Best Musical.
‘Parade’ is a dramatization of the 1913 trial, conviction and eventual murder of Jewish-American factory worker Leo Frank for the murder of a 13-year old girl, as a result of a flawed trial, media sensationalism and misinformation. With a flawed trial and media coverage fuelled by antisemitism and a rather violent outcome, ‘Parade’ rings as true now as it did a century ago when Leo Frank was captured. Even though ‘Parade’s tale has an incredible depth, boasts emotional performances, and is poignant, is it also gloriously hopeful, gorgeous, and filled with breathtaking moments.
‘Parade’ is a poignant musical that will catch you off-guard, the music is a masterful blend of folk, rock, R&B and gospel genres, the production has just enough razzle dazzle to captivate, and the tale is eerily timeless - an all-around must-see.
And now, nearly three decades after its Broadway premiere and two years after its highly successful revival, ’Parade’ is finally hitting the road - and Washington, it’s coming to your neck of the woods! It’s not every day that a musical with such a great track record takes a local stage, so you should grab this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity with both hands!
The Kennedy Center Opera House is especially known for its comfortable seating across various levels, state-of-the-art sound and lighting, superb acoustics, and fantastic amenities. All-in-all, an exceptional theatrical experience is on the cards!
Get your tickets now, and see it before the parade passes by - it will stick with you long after the curtains have fallen and the theatre lights have dimmed.
