The Outsiders - The New Musical

S.E. Hinton’s iconic novel ‘The Outsiders’ was a literary staple in every single middle and high school English class|has been one of those books everybody need to read at least once in their lives since it was first released}, and even though some eyebrows were raised at the cutting-edge content flexing both muscle and tenderness at the same time, we were all moved by the relevance of the tale of Tonyboy Curtis, Johnny Cade, Sodapop Curtis, Cherry Valance and the others.

The success of the novel, however, left some massive shoes to fill, and the question is whether that is even remotely possible.

And the answer is a resounding yes! Since its premiere in 2023 at the La Jolla Playhouse and making its Broadway debut in 2024, ‘The Outsiders’ had a firm grip on the hearts of every single audience member, winning them over once more. The breathtaking fusion of story, sound, lights, and movement, topped by music that is quickly becoming the new song for misfits, guaranteed to linger long after the theatre lights have dimmed.

Add a 60s-sounding score tinged with folk influences and a dash of pop-country such as ’Throwing in the Towel’, ’Hoods Turned Heroes’, ‘Justice for Tulsa’, and ’Runs in the Family’, delivered in the superb voices of a magnificent cast peppered with newcomers, a generous serving of powerful visual vignettes, jaw-dropping choreography, a gritty, yet effective warehouse-like set, and a fiery, visceral approach to the violence, and top it with creative choices that hit all the right notes, and you have a production that is quickly becoming one of Broadway’s loudest success stories.

‘The Outsiders’ ticks all the boxes and then some: enough of both newness and familiarity for that x-factor you won’t easily find, the struggles of have-nots that are trying to create rather than destroy in a world with everything against them, questions about the vulnerability of teenage boys to violence and harm, the fragility of life and love, and the struggles of having a lot of heart and remaining truthful in an unkind world, the continuous movement between heart-wrenching and heart-warming and the realization that every single award that ‘The Outsiders’ received was well deserved - including four Tony Awards, an Outer Critics Circle Award, two Drama Desk Awards, a Theatre World Award, and a Chita Rivera Award.

There is no doubt: ‘The Outsiders’ is an outsider stepping into the inner-circle of top Broadway productions.
