The Outsiders Musical

When a famed story hits the stage, it is usually pretty clear that it is bound to follow in the footsteps of its source - and the ‘The Outsiders’, masterfully set to music by Jonathan Clay, Zach Chance, and Justin Levine, and its book ingeniously crafted by Adam Rapp and Justin Levine, is no exception to the rule.

The story

The story, touching on the susceptibility of teenage boys to brutality and suffering, the socio-economic struggles the working-class youth are faced with, the trepidations and confusions of being young, conflict, teen angst, and, of course, romance, hit the stage like a ton of bricks in 2023, and opened at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre on Broadway in 2024.

Its clever fusion of sound, lighting, movement, no holds barred story, and prodigious cast mostly comprising debutantes, oozed with that x-factor only a new creation can bring and blew audiences from all walks of life away. ‘The Outsiders’ landed four Tony Awards, an Outer Critics Circle Award, two Drama Desk Awards, a Theatre World Award, as well as a Chita Rivera Award.

If you’re a fan, you’ll remember Ponyboy Curtis, Johnny Cade, and the lot, the violence between the two rival gangs and working-class ‘Greasers’ and the upper-middle-class ‘Socs’ in 1960s Tulsa. If not, you’ll meet them soon enough, and you’ll fall in love.

The experience

Not only is ‘The Outsiders’ doused with terrific 60s-sounding show tunes tinged with folk and pop-country influences masterfully created by Jonathan Clay, Justin Levine, and Jamestown Revival’s Zach Chance, but also boasts flawlessly choreographed fight scenes, powerful visual vignettes, creative choices that can put even the most accomplished directors to shame, choreography that will make you wonder whether ‘ballet of violence’ is a thing, and production value that makes ‘The Outsiders’ step into the inner circle of the top Broadway productions.
